TRAINING
Derby Recreation Commission offers American Red Cross courses to prepare you to work at an aquatic facility. Courses include: Lifeguard Training, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor. Each course does include pre-requisite skills, so be sure to review these prior to registering.
LIFEGUARD TRAINING
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
Course pre-requisite requirements include:
- 15 years or older by the final day of the course
- Complete the following Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs, and swim 50 more yards.
- Complete a retrieval exercise within 1 minute, 40 seconds or less. This includes: 20 yard swim, surface dive, retrieve a 10lb. brick from 7 – 10 foot depth, swim back 20 yards and exit without using the ladder or steps.
WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR
The purpose of the water safety instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training session and how to evaluate participants’ progress.
Course pre-requisite requirements include:
- 15 years or older by the final day of the course
- Complete the following Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs, and swim 50 more yards.
- Maintain a position on your back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
LIFEGUARD INSTRUCTOR
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the basic-level courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. Students must be 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of the class and possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate and complete the following pre-requisites: (1) demonstrate competency in the pre-course skills and scenarios.
Course pre-requisite requirements include:
- 17 years or older by the final day of the course
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate or an equivalent certificate from another organization
- Complete the following Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs, and swim 50 more yards.
- Complete a retrieval exercise within 1 minute, 40 seconds or less. This includes: 20 yard swim, surface dive, retrieve a 10lb. brick from 7 – 10 foot depth, swim back 20 yards and exit without using the ladder or steps.
- Successfully complete the online session for the lifeguarding instructor course which consists of the following:
- Orientation to the American Red Cross
- Orientation to the Lifeguard Instructor course and pre-course exam
