Health education programs are designed to empower Derby residence to improve their health and quality of life. Programs are managed by the Derby Health Collaborative.

The Derby Health Collaborative is challenging every resident in Derby and the USD 260 community to a month-long walking program. Walking is a low-impact exercise that packs surprisingly powerful health benefits and Let’s Move Derby Community inspires people to make walking a part of their healthy lifestyles.

Anyone can participate by setting a goal to walk five days each week during the month of September. To be eligible for prizes download a challenge tracking card at the DRC website. Complete the card and turn your tracking card in to the DRC by October 15. For more information contact Debbie at 788-3781 or .

Join us these Saturdays in September for a group community walk with one of our “local celebrities”. We will have 1, 2 and 3 mile routes.

Let's Move Derby Schools 
Starting healthy habits while in school is the key to staying healthy for a lifetime. During the month of September, staff and students in USD 260 record the number of minutes they are active each day. These minutes convert to individual and school miles. Prizes will be awarded during this friendly competition to the most active school and the most active students. Check with your school’s PE teacher or go to the DRC website to download your tracking card. 


Derby Walks
Join the Derby Walks Initiative by pledging to walk 30 minutes most days to improve and maintain your health. Walking is great for your health and only requires a good pair of shoes.  Walking reduces the risk of many chronic diseases too. By signing up and tracking your time, you will become eligible to use the indoor track at the DRC free of charge on inclement weather days. Download the forms at www.drc.com or call 788-3781.

Derby Walks Jamboree
The last Wednesday of each month the Derby Walks initiative will host a social event on the DRC track. Health and wellness tips will be available, blood pressure can be taken, and guidance will be given on how to make your walk more enjoyable. If you’d like to find a walking partner that can be arranged too. Come walk and enjoy a little social time with other walkers.

As you walk along thepath, you discover another page, and then another and you realize you’re reading a story! StoryWalk combines the pleasures of reading wonderful children’s books aloud with all the joys and benefits of walking together outdoors. Conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and other adults to take young children outdoors to enjoy reading stories together, StoryWalk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy outdoor activity for both children and their families. Join the fun at Derby’s High Park!

learn skills for buying healthy foods on a budget.  During the hour tour, you’ll practice skills like buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices to find bargains, reading and comparing food labels, identifying whole grains and sticking to your budget! After the tour you will receive a free book full of tasty recipes and simple tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods and a free reusable grocery bag. Register now, space is limited in each class.

Eat Healthy, Be Active Workshop Series
Unfortunately, people are frequently too busy, on a limited budget, or simply do not know how to make wise choices about food. This workshop series can help you make food choices that promote good health, maintain a healthy weight, and prevent disease. You will acquire the skills and knowledge needed to make healthy, nutritionally sound choices that lead to a better quality of life. Each workshop offers basic nutrition, hands-on learning, and cooking demonstrations to promote healthy changes in the diet. These workshops teach individuals how small changes in diet (reducing sugar, salt, fats, and calories) combined with adequate physical activity add up to improved health.

September 19, 6:00 p.m. -That Sugar Film
"That Sugar Film" is one man's journey to discover the bitter truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as 'healthy'. Through this entertaining and informative journey, Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar lurks on supermarket shelves. "That Sugar Film" will forever change the way you think about 'healthy' food.

October 17, 6:00 p.m. - Fed Up
For the past 30 years, everything we thought we knew about food and exercise is dead wrong. FED UP is the film the food industry doesn't want you to see. FED UP will change the way you eat forever.

November 21, 6:00 p.m. - Bite Size
America’s battle against childhood obesity is an issue too big for many to fully comprehend. With one in three children overweight, the epidemic is sweeping our nation at an unforgiving rate. But in spite of these odds, Bite Size showcases the stories of four inspiring kids from diverse backgrounds who are fighting for their health one day at a time. Proving that it’s not just about the number on a scale, what really matters is learning what keeps you active and makes you happy.

Diabetes Academy

Diabetes Academy is a free one hour class given by a Novo Nordisk Diabetes Educator to help you learn about managing diabetes.You will learn basic information and terminology, tips for eating healthy and staying active, and the basics about diabetes medications.

Diabetes Self-Management Program
If you are living with diabetes or a caregiver of someone who does, this workshop is for you! Diabetes self management workshops are interactive learning opportunities that teach techniques to manage common symptoms. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders. 

Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition, and an audio relaxation tape. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives.

Living Well With "IT"
Chronic Disease Self Management Program (CDSMP)


If you are living with depression, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc., then this 6-week program is for you. This CDSMP workshop is interactive and helps you learn techniques to manage your chronic condition. Workshops are free and led by trained leaders. Each participant in the workshop receives a copy of the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Condition, and an audio relaxation tape. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling live.

Safe Sleep Seminar

SIDS is the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause even after a complete investigation. Each year in the United States, thousands of babies die suddenly and unexpectedly. These deaths are called SUID (pronounced SOO-idd), which stands for “Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.” The Derby Health Collaborative will host a seminar to inform parents, grandparents and friends about the newest research and the best practices to keep your infants safe and healthy. New moms (within 1 year) and expectant moms will received a portable baby crib upon completion of the requirements.
